Reports and Articles on Koh Chang Island:
The East Coast
Driving along the eastern
coast of Koh Chang Island reveals one source the islanders
make a living on: fruit, coconut and rubber
plantations occupy the narrow stretch between the rocky coast
and the foot of the mountains. Every village has a small pier, where
fishing boats are waiting to go out to catch the abundant marine life.
At Than Mayom the headquarters of Koh Chang National Park are located
and a narrow road leads from there to Than Mayom Waterfall,
a picturesque waterfall, descending into a series of deep pools through
a water-polished rock gorge.
Further south, the
muddy coast is dominated by mangrove forests and
finally, Salak Phet Bay is reached, the second bay that forms Koh
Chang's southern coastline. The sheltered bay makes an ideal fishing
harbour and this is what most villagers make a living on. Rong Than
Village is the biggest community on the Koh Chang Island with a temple
and a monastery forming the religious centre of this area.
