Reports and Articles on Koh Chang Island:
Beaches on the West Coast
The western coast
of Koh Chang Island is spectacular. Beautiful beaches, coves and bays
are interrupted by rocky headlands and backed by mountains rising
to 743 metres covered with lush virgin rainforests
and fascinating waterfalls. Numerous
islands dot the western and southern coast of Koh Chang Island and
beneath the clear blue sea, colourful coral reefs and abundant marine
life is waiting to be discovered.
From Ao Sapparot,
a steep and bending road leads to the beaches on the western coast
with the first one, Haad Sai Khao or White Sand Beach being reached
after a 15 minutes drive through an impresssive rain forest area.
On the way you are passing Klong Son Bay that opens to the Northwest
of the Koh Chang Island and boasts the beautiful Aiyapura
Resort set in the natural environment.
Besides basic huts
and bungalow resorts, Haad Sai Khao boasts some resorts of higher
standard, Koh Chang Lagoon
Resort, Banthai Resort
and Banpu Koh Chang Resort.
But the advantage of White Sands Beach on Koh Chang Island is the
fact, that there is a village along the street that offers day and
night time entertainment and shopping for visitors. When the sun sets,
football and volleyball games are played right off its shore and when
darkness falls, it is turned into a BBQ food plaza with resorts and
independent restaurants moving tables, seats and petrol lamps to the
beach for customers to sit along the waterfront and have their seafood
specialities grilled and served to the sound of the rolling waves.
At the southern end
of Haat Sai Khao, where the street starts to climb up, is Plaloma
Cliff Resort. There is no beach in front, but the bungalows are
located at the seafront and with a leisurely stroll along the coast,
the better parts of White Sands Beach on Koh Chang Island are easily
accessed.
Coming down from
the hillside, another long and sandy beach is reached. Khlong Phrao
Beach stretches for 5 kilometres from the rocky Chaiyachet Cape at
its northernmost tip to the south. Koh
Chang Paradise Resort, Koh
Chang Resort, Klong
Prao Resort and Koh
Chang Tropicana offer middle-class style accommodation, while
Panviman Resort, Barali
Resort and Amari
Emerald Cove offer more upmarket style accommodation on Koh Chang
Island.
Separated by a small hill
where a rocky headland extends into the sea lays Kai Bae
Beach further southon Koh Chang Island. This is a beach of scenic
beauty whith islands scattered in the Blue of the Gulf of Thailand,
some so close you feel like swimming across. Chang
Cliff Resort, Koh Chang
Park Resort and Koh
Chang Grand Cabana offer middle-class accommodation in different
categories. Climbing up the street to the next hills, a sign to Seaview
Resort is found that is located down from the road with a beautiful
Thai-style reception and an adjacent mainbuilding overlooking a sandy
bay south of Kai Bae Beach.
The last beach is
Haad Thanam or Lonely Beach with the upmarket Bumi
Yama Resort, then the coast becomes more and more rocky and the
street is again bending through rain
forests to reach Bang Bao Bay, one of the 2 bays forming the southern
coastline of Koh Chang Island.
Bang Bao Village
is located in the bay with the same name. With its ensemble of wooden
houses that are entirely built on stilts above the water it resembles
the famous Panyee fishing village in Phang Nga Bay, fortunately it
lacks its mass tourism so far. Life here is moving in a different
pace and for visitors this is seafood's heaven where restaurants serve
fresh daily catch with a fine seaview of Koh Chang Island's southern
coast line.
